Credit, investment, and employment are vital components of the home buying process. Generally, any combination of two components can qualify you for a mortgage. But there are other issues to address. Once you have set your criteria (likes and dislikes) and narrowed your home search to one or two properties, ask yourself the following questions. Your answers could break the tie.

  1. How do I feel when I walk in? Do I feel at home? Am I uneasy?
  2. What is the neighborhood like on Friday nights? On Saturdays? On Sunday afternoons? On weeknights? Do I feel safe every time I go there?
  3. Where will my children go to school? How will they get there?
  4. Is the home close enough to gas stations, grocery stores, post offices and other routine business services? Do I care?
  5. What do I think of the yard (or common area, if a condominium)? Will it provide what I want – a place for solitude? A play area for the children? A garden? A party spot?
  6. Will my furniture fit here? Is it too big, too old, not fresh enough for the new place? How will I arrange it?
  7. Do I like the existing window coverings? What would I change about them? Do I like blinds or shutters, or should I use draperies?
  8. How do I like the carpet? Is it clean? Do I like the color? Can I live with it for a while, or should I just buy new, installed before I move in?
  9. How do I like the paint/wall coverings? What would I change?
  10. Do I like the fixtures in the bathroom and kitchen? Maybe another style would look better.
  11. What about the windows – how to they look? Are they free of cracks? Are there screens on the windows? Will I want to change anything, or can I live with them as they are until I decide?
  12. When was the roof installed or repaired? Of what material is it made? How does it look?
